The Bride’s
Dress Guide

A dress that looks beautiful on a mannequin ≠ beautiful on you.

And the greatest pity is realising it after the deposit is paid. This little book gathers 8 sections, all charts and photographs — ten minutes to read and you walk into the fitting room sure of yourself.

THE WHOLE BOOK IN ONE PICTURE

Choosing a dress in 5 steps

Take them in order and the fitting is half as long. Take them at random and twelve dresses later you still won’t know what you like.

01Read your figureCompare shoulders — waist — hips. Whichever is widest is your shape.
02Choose the silhouetteEvery figure has 1–2 safe silhouettes. Start there.
03Try the fabricSame silhouette, different fabric — a different woman entirely.
04Settle the liningThe step nobody thinks about, and the one that decides how you read in photographs.
05Choose the veilTry it at the same appointment. And look in the mirror with it off, too.

A small trick that works

Screenshot this very chart and take it to your fitting. A picture always says it faster than words — and spares you describing what you feel shy about.

SECTION 01

Know yourself

Before choosing a dress, understand the person who will wear it. Three questions — answer them and 70% of the fitting is done.

5–10photographs of dresses you love, gathered into one album to see what repeats
3places to compare in the mirror: shoulders — waist — hips
1question your stylist will certainly ask: what to show — what to soften?

Question three is the hardest

And also the greatest time-saver. Say it plainly and your consultant can rule out half the rail on the spot.

Quiz · 6 questions · 1 minute

What kind of bride are you?

Choose what is most like you, not what sounds grandest 😌

1. Your everyday wardrobe — what is there most of?

2. Which wedding photographs do you save on Pinterest and Instagram?

3. Where does your dream wedding take place?

4. What jewellery would you choose for the day?

5. What would you love guests to say as you walk in?

6. What do you fear most about wearing a wedding dress?

Your taste

Four kinds of bride

Once you can name your taste, you walk in knowing which rail to start from.

A plain minimal satin wedding dressType A

Elegant minimal

Plain satin, few details. The beauty is in the cut.

A beaded ballgown wedding dressType B

Splendid princess

A full ballgown skirt, beadwork, a long veil behind.

A layered tulle and organza wedding dressType C

Dreamy romantic

Tulle and layers of organza, light as cloud.

A close-fitting lace mermaid wedding dressType D

Modern sensual

A mermaid worn close, sheer lace, a low open back.

Not being able to name your taste is fine too

Most brides only know for sure after trying a few dresses on. Bring the album you have gathered and your stylist will find what they have in common — that is what we are here for.

Keep your result

Let Dolinhanh suggest dresses in your taste

Leave your name and Zalo number and Dolinhanh will send a few dresses in the taste you have just read, with the price list too — no need to ask back and forth.

“Is there anything you love to show, or anything you would rather soften?” The most important question in a fitting
SECTION 02

Preparing for the fitting

Prepare properly and one appointment is worth three rushed ones. Tick as you go — this page remembers for you.

02 · WHAT TO WEAR UNDERNEATH

Underwear for a fitting

The question brides ask most before a first fitting. The rule: nude, no straps, no heavy underwire, no visible edges.

Open the details: what to wear, what to avoidClose

Wear these

  • Strapless braIn nude. It works under every dress.
  • Stick-on braWedding dresses are often open at the back or shoulders — this is the easiest.
  • Nude bodysuitSupports the bust and smooths the waist; comfortable all afternoon.
  • High-waisted briefsA high waist leaves no line under satin.

Avoid these

  • A bra with strapsThe straps show and you cannot see the true shape.
  • A white braWhite shows through fine tulle even more than nude.
  • Heavy wire, thick paddingIt changes the shape of the bust, so a dress made to those measurements will sit wrongly.
  • Thick lace briefsThey press a line across the satin that shows straight away in photographs.

Wearing nothing is fine too

Most wedding dresses already have a supportive corset and padding sewn inside. Many brides wear only nude briefs — just say so to your consultant, there is nothing to feel awkward about.

02 · SHOES

Try in flat sandals and the hem will always come out wrong

The length is set to your height in your shoes. Finding out on the day that the dress sits short or sweeps the floor is a little late.

Open the details: the three pairs to bringClose
Crystal-trimmed bridal heels

Three pairs cover the whole day

  • FlatformsFor a full skirt — hidden completely, and you can stand all evening without aching.
  • Heels, 5–7cmFor dresses that show the leg: mermaid, a slit, a fitted shape.
  • A low spare pairKept in the waiting room. Change when your feet tire — under a full skirt no one notices.

Three things nobody warns you about

Put the dress and shoes on, then stand beside your groom and look in the mirror (too much volume can leave him lost in the photographs). Wear new shoes at home a few evenings to soften the heel. Put heel pads on beforehand and carry plasters — the rubbing starts after about two hours of standing.

SECTION 03

How many dresses is enough

Try too few and you have nothing to compare. Try too many and you forget the first one.

4basic silhouettes to try: A-line · ballgown · mermaid · sheath

Don’t rely on the mirror — ask for photographs

A mirror flatters you; a photograph does not. For every dress, ask for a short video of the front and the back (the back is what you cannot see and what guests see most). Look at them that evening and you will see everything.

Do try one dress you are sure won’t suit you

That is the one that surprises brides most. And in every dress, sit down, raise your arms, walk a few steps — don’t just stand still in front of the mirror.

SECTION 04

Which silhouette suits your figure

Choose by proportion, never by weight. In the mirror compare shoulders — waist — hips; whichever is widest is your shape. No shape is better than another, only silhouettes that suit it better.

Torn between two shapes?

Choose the one that includes the part you would rather soften — that direction is safer. And at the fitting, your consultant will see it for you in thirty seconds.

04 · QUICK TABLE

What worries you → what to wear

Almost everything you are worried about already has a silhouette designed to answer it.

Open the table: 9 worries → the silhouetteClose

Above the waist

  • Fuller arms→ Light puff sleeves or sheer tulle sleeves, an off-shoulder V. The shoulder line is drawn out, so the whole looks slimmer.
  • Smaller bust→ A padded straight neckline, a ruched or pleated bodice, a square neck.
  • Fuller bust→ An open V neckline, wide straps to carry the shoulders. Comfortable all evening.
  • Broad shoulders→ A deep V, a soft off-shoulder. Avoid wide puff sleeves.

Waist · hips · back · height

  • Fuller hips→ An A-line flaring from the waist. If you love a mermaid, choose one that opens from mid-thigh.
  • An undefined waist→ An A-line or empire gathered under the bust and falling softly, with a narrow belt at the waist.
  • Marks or scars on the back→ A sheer tulle back, lace across it, or wide crossed straps.
  • A petite figure→ A high waist, a plain minimal skirt, moderate volume, a soft slit.
  • Long body, shorter legs→ An empire lifts the waistline and lengthens the legs visually. Avoid a dropped waist.

Please remember this

You do not need to lose weight, lighten your skin or change anything about yourself before walking into a fitting room. Finding the dress that suits you is our work.

04 · THE LINING

Change the lining and the whole mood changes

On the same lace, four linings give four different feelings. The step nobody thinks about, and the clearest of all in photographs.

WhitePure, traditional, timeless.
NudeLifts the lace, gives depth.
Blush PinkSweet, romantic, feminine.
Silver GreyModern, fashion-led, full of character.
Open the details: choosing by skin toneClose

Choosing for your skin

Cool tone

  • Fair, pink skin→ White and Blush Pink, for a clear look. For something modern, add Silver Grey.

Warm tone

  • Fair, ivory skin→ Nude reads seamless and the lace stands out. Ivory white gives a classic look.
  • Golden brown skin→ A nude a shade deeper than the skin. Silver Grey looks strikingly modern.
  • Deep brown skin→ A deep nude honours the lace. Pure white is the most photogenic of all.

Reading your skin tone in 10 seconds

In natural light, turn your wrist and look at the veins. If they read blue or purple → a cool tone. If they read green, slightly olive → a warm tone. See both and you are neutral, every shade works 🎉

Three things to remember when choosing the lining

Look at it in the light of the party itself (warm restaurant light ≠ white fitting-room light). Photograph it, two shades side by side — a photograph shows the difference far better than a mirror. And try it wearing the make-up you plan to have.

Some things you never notice standing still in a mirror — eight hours in the dress and you feel them all. Section 05 · The details
SECTION 05

The details, while it is on you

Tick each box while you have it on — don’t wait until you are home.

The lace corset inside a wedding dress A beaded sleeve on a wedding dress A seamstress altering a dress to measure A long bridal veil

Ask about extra costs during the fitting

An added overskirt, an off-shoulder detail, gloves, a different veil — these are the easiest costs to run into and the easiest to avoid. You only have to ask first.

SECTION 06

Four fabric names worth knowing

Know these four and you can talk to any bridal house.

Lace on a wedding dress

Lace

Romantic, classic. Particular about skin tone — try it in real light.

Tulle on a wedding dress

Tulle

Light as cloud, softens the figure, moves beautifully on camera.

Ruched satin on a wedding dress

Satin

Smooth and lustrous, honours a minimal line. It sits close and shows the body.

Organza on a wedding dress

Organza

Light yet full of structure. Right for outdoors, and for volume without a heavy skirt.

5 things to check while it is on

Look at it under 3 kinds of light: the fitting-room lights, daylight from a window, your phone’s flash.
Sit for 2 minutes and stand up — does the fabric crease and hold the crease .
Stand still for 15 minutes — does it feel hot, itchy, airless .
Feel the inside: is the layer against your skin rough.
Walk a few steps and turn — does the dress move with you, or are you dragging it along?
SECTION 07

Ask everything before you pay

Ask first and there is nothing to argue about later. A decent studio answers each one straight.

SECTION 08

Don’t decide on a five-minute feeling

Feelings run high in a fitting room, and they are not always right.

Do this instead

  • Sleep on it, then look at the photographsIn daylight it all feels quite different.
  • Put your final three side by sideCover the faces and look only at the shape.
  • Torn between two dresses?Whichever one you keep describing to other people — choose that one.

Ask yourself before you say yes

  • Could I wear this for 8 hours?
  • Do I love it, or does the person with me love it?
  • Looking at the photographs in 10 years, will I still see myself?

How you know you have found the dress

You stop turning round to ask everyone “does it look good?”. You look in the mirror and you already know.

“Yes. This is me.”

You do not need the dress that makes everyone say “wow, what a beautiful dress”. You need the dress that makes you look in the mirror and say the words above.
